“America is a tune.”

America is a tune.

As America approaches its 250th birthday, I was eager to find inspiration in quotes by U.S. historical figures. I thought I would stumble upon moving words from former presidents and activists, but I stumbled upon this simple quote from a man I never studied in any history class.

“America is a tune. It must be sung together.” — Gerald Stanley Lee

As a communications professional, I am moved by the idea of our country being a story that needs to be told, even sung. It is a narrative that depends on harmony. One voice alone cannot carry it.

I am also intrigued by Lee’s own story, especially his faith in mass media to improve the world. He believed media had the power to strengthen democratic life by connecting citizens to one another. He saw communication not merely as the transmission of information, but as the infrastructure of national cohesion.

Unfortunately, America’s 250th anniversary arrives at a moment when the country’s information landscape is deeply fragmented. Outrage often travels faster than understanding. The challenge of maintaining a shared commitment to democratic participation even amid profound differences is overwhelming.

So, how can we bring the notes together and carry a more beautiful tune? It is incumbent upon media and communications specialists to foster trust and civic dialogue. At Cate Urban Communications, we are proud to take on this reponsibility.

Happy Independence Day! Come together to have fun and stay safe!
